Abstract:

Neutron is one of the fundamental particles forming atoms and thus matter. The unique properties of thermal neutrons have made the neutron a powerful probe in characterisation and investigation of various materials on an atomic scale. Both the wavelength and energy of thermal neutrons are comparable to the scale of the structure and the energy of elementary excitation in matter. Inelastic neutron scattering can not only probe the dynamic properties of atoms but simultaneously reveal the correlations of dynamics and structure, i.e. time and space correlation that is required for a fundamental understanding of material properties. In this presentation, I will demonstrate how inelastic neutron scattering can help in studying material dynamics with several examples from the scientific outcomes of the PELICAN time of flight neutron spectrometer at ANSTO. These include studies on caloric materials, thermal electric materials and novel magnetic materials. In the end, the new developed capabilities of the instrument will be presented.

Short bio:

Dr. Dehong Yu got his Bachelor and Master degrees in Physics in China. He received his PhD. in Physics from The University of Western Australia in 1997. Following Australian Research Council research fellowship, he was awarded Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship in 2001. At Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), he led and developed a new neutron spectrometer - Pelican. He has been working in several international renowned scientific institutions: Tokyo University in Japan as JSPS fellow, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in USA. His current interest is in studying structure and dynamics of functional materials with neutrons and synchrotron radiations.
